Motocross/enduro bike handlebar pad: what it's for

You look at a motocross bike that really pops and wonder why yours looks a bit "bland factory-fresh" next to it? Often, the detail that changes everything is the handlebar pad. That little cushion sitting on the crossbar of the handlebar, you see it on every real track bike. And no, it's not just about style: it protects your face and your tank. Here at the workshop in Pia (66380), we've been hand-stitching seat covers for 7 years, and the handlebar pad is THE add-on we recommend to finish the look. We'll explain what it's really for and how to choose it well.

What exactly is a handlebar pad?

The handlebar pad (or "bar pad") is that dense foam cushion that slides onto the horizontal reinforcement bar of your handlebar, right in front of the top triple clamp. You'll find it as standard on almost every motocross and enduro bike fitted with a braced handlebar. On "fat bar" handlebars (without a crossbar), there are specific models mounted on the clamp.

Its job is twofold: protect and dress up. It's a tiny part compared to a seat, but visually it sits right in your field of view when you ride. So it might as well be clean and matching the rest.

What's it actually for?

  • Protection in a crash: in motocross and enduro, you sometimes end up with your chest on the handlebar. The pad cushions the impact between your chest, your chin and the metal bar. That's its number one reason to exist.
  • Protecting the bike: it stops flying debris, branches or your own helmet from marking the triple-clamp area and the top of the tank.
  • The style: it's the finishing touch that makes a well-prepped bike look the part. A clean, colourful pad transforms a bare handlebar.
  • Visual marker: on a dark bike, a bright-coloured pad helps you grab the handlebar at a glance.

How to choose your handlebar pad?

No need to overthink it, but three points are worth a look before you click.

1. The handlebar type: braced or fat bar

Look at your handlebar. If it has a crossbar (the horizontal tube between the two sides), you need a classic pad that slides over it. If it's a fat bar without a crossbar, you need a model designed to attach to the clamp. The vast majority of 50cc geared bikes and classic motocross/enduro machines have a braced handlebar: the standard pad will do.

2. The fastening

Most pads close with hook-and-loop straps (Velcro type) or straps. That's what lets you fit it and remove it without dismantling the handlebar. Just check it tightens up well so it doesn't twist while riding.

3. The colour (the real subject)

This is where it gets interesting. A black handlebar pad goes with anything, but a pad matched to your graphics is what makes people say "that bike's well prepped". At BKS, the BKS handlebar pad collection comes in several colours (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, white, grey, turquoise, purple...) so you can match your world, from 17,90 €.

The trick that changes everything: match the pad to your seat cover

Here's the advice we repeat to every rider who orders a cover. The secret of a "factory" look (like the works bikes) isn't one piece that pops, it's colour consistency across the whole bike. Seat, graphics kit, rims... and handlebar pad.

If you order a custom seat cover with, say, turquoise-blue piping, get your handlebar pad in the same shade. The eye catches the seat, travels up to the handlebar, and everything matches: that's what looks pro. We've written a full guide about it, go and read it: Matching your seat cover to your graphics kit and rims: the colour guide.

And since we make our covers custom and hand-stitched, we know exactly which colours are available: it's easy to put together a perfectly coordinated seat + pad combo. To go further on choosing your cover according to your riding style, take a look at Motocross, enduro or supermoto seat cover: how to choose.

The winning combo for a 100% matching look

  1. Choose your bike's dominant colour (often set by the graphics kit or the plastics' shade).
  2. Order your custom seat cover along that colour logic through the configurator.
  3. Add the handlebar pad in the matching shade.
  4. If needed, complete it with the graphics kit. Inspiration here: Top 5 Derbi / Beta graphics kits to match with our seats.

Why a BKS handlebar pad?

Because we're riders first and foremost. Our accessories are designed to match our covers, made with the same care at the workshop in France (7 years of know-how). You order a cover + a pad, and you get a coherent set, not two things bought at random that clash. And budget-wise, the handlebar pad is the little accessory that finishes the look from 17,90 € without breaking the bank.

Practical bonus: shipping is free from 100 € of purchase, and you can pay in 3 or 4 instalments at no cost. So a cover + pad combo goes through easily. And if you don't like it after all, you have your 14-day right of withdrawal.

FAQ — Motorcycle handlebar pad

What is a handlebar pad for on a motocross bike?

It cushions the impact between your chest/chin and the handlebar in a crash, protects the top of the bike, and adds the touch of style that makes a well-prepped bike look the part.

Is the handlebar pad compatible with all handlebars?

Classic pads fit on braced handlebars with a crossbar (the most common case on 50cc and motocross/enduro). For a fat bar without a crossbar, you need a specific model fixed on the clamp. Check your handlebar type before ordering.

Which handlebar pad colour should you choose?

The ideal is to match it to your seat cover and your graphics kit for a matching "factory" look. The BKS collection offers a wide range of colours to match your graphics.

How much does a BKS handlebar pad cost?

Our handlebar pads start at 17,90 €. The exact price depends on the colour chosen: you'll see the current price directly on each model's product page in the collection.

Can you order the pad at the same time as the seat cover?

Yes, and that's actually what we recommend: it guarantees you a coordinated set, made with the same care at the workshop. You also get free shipping from 100 € and payment in 3 or 4 instalments at no cost.

Ready to finish your bike's look?

Start with your custom seat cover, then add the matching handlebar pad. Configure your custom seat cover in 3D and choose your colours — the pad will follow in the same shade for a 100% matching result.
